Sweden: the first-occasion bonus rule
Swedish guidance says a licensee may offer or provide a bonus only on the first occasion a player participates in one of its games. The rule concerns the licensee, not merely the trading brand. A newly encountered website may therefore not represent a new qualifying relationship.

- National permission matters more than international branding.
- Check the company, domain and game category together.
- Promotions never override local law or protective measures.
The local distinction that matters
Identify the company in the Swedish licence register and consider earlier play with that licensee. A list of brand names cannot resolve eligibility. The regulator also discusses court treatment of packages whose later instalments depend on additional deposits. Calling several deposit rewards one welcome package does not automatically make every instalment permissible.
Protection and practical limits
Spelpaus offers national self-exclusion from registered gambling with Swedish licensees. A pending bonus is not a reason to postpone protection. Exclusion limits access; support or counselling can address the wider effects on money, relationships and wellbeing.
Eligibility is a company-history question
A person might recognise neither the corporate name nor the relationship between two Swedish brands. Before treating a welcome message as a first-occasion offer, compare the licensee behind each account. Ask whether earlier participation affects eligibility and retain the answer. A website redesign, new app or rebranding does not by itself create a new legal licensee. This is why a brand-only checklist can produce a mistaken result.
Do not let delayed rewards create repeated commitments
A package can advertise rewards spread across time, but the Swedish guidance discusses why later deposit-dependent payments can amount to additional bonuses. The practical reading task is to identify what was granted at the first occasion and what requires new funding later. Do not assume that a welcome label resolves that distinction. If a later message creates pressure to deposit again, it can be ignored; an earlier acceptance is not a personal commitment to continue gambling.
Common questions
Is every new brand a new first occasion?
Not necessarily. The licensee’s identity and previous participation matter.
Does renaming a bonus as a loyalty reward avoid the rule?
A marketing label does not settle legal classification; consult current regulator guidance.
