Bonus marketing consent and opting out

Consent to receive promotional messages is different from accepting a specific bonus. It is also different from agreeing to account terms. Keeping these decisions separate makes unwanted marketing easier to identify.

The key points
  • An account may contain email, text, push and in-app preferences.
  • Use the account controls and retain a copy of a written request where useful.
  • Removing notifications can reduce triggers but does not stop the account accepting wagers.

Record what was accepted

An account may contain email, text, push and in-app preferences. A general communications setting does not necessarily demonstrate acceptance of an individual incentive’s conditions. Dutch guidance, for example, requires express acceptance of bonus conditions and respect for a request to stop bonuses. Other markets have their own advertising restrictions, so do not generalise one interface across Europe.

Withdraw promotional permission clearly

Use the account controls and retain a copy of a written request where useful. Identify channels and whether the request concerns all gambling promotions. Essential account or security messages may be treated differently from advertising. If unwanted promotions continue, save a sample with date and sender and use the operator’s complaint route or relevant authority guidance.

Do not confuse reduced messages with reduced access

Removing notifications can reduce triggers but does not stop the account accepting wagers. Someone who wants a stronger barrier may need exclusion or another protective tool. Conversely, accepting a transactional email does not mean wanting marketing. A bonus should never be treated as compensation for giving up control over communications without understanding the choice.

A detail worth checking

Messages can arrive through affiliates or other intermediaries rather than directly from the account operator. Record the actual sender and avoid clicking an unfamiliar unsubscribe link that requests sensitive account credentials. Use verified preference controls or contact details where possible. If a message falsely claims an existing account relationship, keep that evidence separately from ordinary promotional mail. An educational website should not imply that receiving an offer establishes eligibility, consent or lawful targeting. The communication is a claim to assess, not proof that every regulatory and contractual condition has been met.

Worked example · hypothetical

Two different checkboxes

A fictional form includes receive offers by email and accept this promotion’s terms. Checking the first does not explain the second’s wagering conditions. The useful record shows what each control meant at the time and whether either was optional, rather than treating all consent as one event.

  1. Identify the relevant account event and preserve its original wording.
  2. Separate known facts from assumptions before drawing a conclusion.
  3. Use the applicable official source or complaint route when a material question remains.

Common questions

Does opting out cancel my account?

Not necessarily. Marketing preferences and account access are separate.

Should I keep unwanted messages as evidence?

Keep a small relevant sample securely, including dates and any earlier opt-out confirmation.
